چکیده

For more than two decades numerical models of the Earth's magnetosphere have been used successfully to study magnetospheric dynamic features such as the excitation of ULF pulsations and the mechanism of ®eld line resonance. However, numerical formulations simplify important properties of the real system. For instance the Alfve n continuum becomes discrete because of a ®nite grid size. This discretization can be a possible source of numerical artifacts. Therefore a careful interpretation of any observed features is required. Examples of such artifacts are presented using results from a three dimensional dipole model of the magnetosphere, including an inhomogeneous distribution of the Alfve n velocity.

Different eigenproblem models for field line resonances in cold plasma: Effect on magnetospheric density estimates

Magnetospheric plasma density can be remotely sensed through ground-based magnetometer data using a suitable model for field line resonances (FLRs) formed by standing shear Alfvén wave on closed geomagnetic field lines. The simplest type of FLR model, which is also the most relevant for magnetometer data inversion purposes, is based on solving a certain eigenvalue problem. Over the years a numb...

A comparison of field-line resonances observed at the Goose Bay and Wick radars

Previous observations with the Goose Bay HF coherent-scatter radar have revealed structured spectral peaks at ultra-low frequencies. The frequencies of these spectral peaks have been demonstrated to be extremely consistent from day to day. The stability of these spectral peaks can be seen as evidence for the existence of global magnetospheric cavity modes whose resonant frequencies are independ...

Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Coupling by Alfvén Waves: Beyond Current Continuity

Many numerical models of magnetospheric dynamics treat the ionosphere as an inner boundary condition. These models have traditionally used the current continuity condition, treating the ionosphere as a sheet current in which the electric field is electrostatic. A more general boundary condition is suggested that not only is more complete, but also straightforward to implement. Results from a mo...

Solar wind driving of magnetospheric ULF waves: Field line resonances driven by dynamic pressure fluctuations

[1] Several observational studies suggest that solar wind dynamic pressure fluctuations can drive magnetospheric ultralow‐frequency (ULF) waves on the dayside. To investigate this causal relationship, we present results from Lyon‐Fedder‐Mobarry (LFM) global, three‐dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the solar wind–magnetosphere interaction. These simulations are driven with syn...

Detection of ultralow-frequency cavity modes using spacecraft data

[1] The cold, magnetized plasma in the Earth’s magnetosphere supports two ultralowfrequency plasma wave modes. Both these modes may exhibit resonant oscillations in the magnetosphere cavity. Theoretical and numerical studies have predicted the existence of cavity/waveguide resonance modes, yet experimental evidence is sparse. In this paper we detail the expected structure of these modes using b...
